After receiving her bachelor’s degree in sociology and social work from Luther College in 1998, Dettman-Kruse pursed a master’s degree at Iowa State University. She completed her master’s work in sociology in 2000 and decided to continue her graduate studies with research interests focusing on the intersectionality of gender, mental health, and deviance in rural areas. From 2004 to 2007, Dettman-Kruse was a faculty member in the Department of Social Science at Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin. She taught courses in research methods, social theory, and women’s studies. While in Wisconsin she served on the Wisconsin Sociological Association Executive Committee from 2005 to 2007 and Chaired the Edgewood College Human Participants Review Board from 2006 to 2007. She has received awards for teaching and community service including the Assault Care Center Extending Shelter and Support Volunteer of the Year Award. Dettman-Kruse joined the UF/IFAS International Programs Office in 2008 after relocating to the Gainesville area. She brings an assortment of experiences to the position including research interests which encompass rural and agricultural elements. Her knowledge areas compliment the scope of work supported by International Programs. She is originally from northeast Iowa and comes from an agricultural background rooted in her family’s 150 year old farm.
